This article has been tested to work with the following products and versions. No guarantee of compatibility, with or without modification, is offered for products or versions other than those listed.
- Windows Server 2008 and 2003 (Microsoft)
IN THIS ARTICLE:
Windows Server supports advanced themes, but they are not enabled by default. In fact, in Windows Server 2008, they are not even installed by default and will need to be added separately.
The ability to use advanced themes is controlled by the Themes service. You will need administrative privileges to enable the Themes service. Once enabled, you can enjoy the Windows XP or Windows Vista theme on Windows Server.
WINDOWS SERVER 2008
Add the Desktop Experience feature
Before you can switch to the Windows Vista theme, you must first add the Desktop Experience feature (which includes themes) to Windows Server 2008. This process requires a system restart. You can add the feature using the following steps:
- Open the Start Menu.
- Choose Server Manager from the Administrative Tools menu.
- Select Features, and then click Add Features.
- In the Add Features Wizard, select the Desktop Experience check box (as shown in Screenshot 1), click Next, and then Install.
- Click Yes to the dialog (shown in Screenshot 2) asking Do You Want To Restart Now?
Windows Server 2008 will configure the updates and then restart. After it restarts it will finish configuring the updates.
