This article has been tested to work with the following products and versions. No guarantee of compatibility, with or without modification, is offered for products or versions other than those listed.
- Photoshop CS3 (Adobe)
IN THIS ARTICLE:
Braintrove articles that make use of the Lab Color mode in Photoshop will be based on some specific settings which are different from the defaults. This article will assist you in modifying those defaults so that you can effectively follow the articles. These adjustments follow the recommendations of the excellent and highly recommended book by Dan Margulis: Photoshop LAB Color: The canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace.
Specifically, we will change the defaults in the Convert To Profile dialog box and in the Curves dialog box. While it is faster to choose Mode | Lab Color from the Image menu, we want to have more control over the conversion process, so instead we convert to the Lab Color profile.
Before you begin you should create a new RGB or CYMK image. It can be blank.
Configure the Convert To Profile dialog box default settings
The main thing we want to fix here is to make sure we don’t have dither set. Use the following steps to change the Convert To Profile defaults for the Lab Color profile:
- Choose Convert To Profile from the Edit menu.
- Choose Lab Color from the Profile drop-down.
- Clear the Use Dither check box.
- Ensure that all other setting match that of Dialog 1, and then click OK.
Configure the Curves dialog box default settings
For curves, we will flip the light/dark orientation and switch to a finer grid. Use the following steps to make these changes:
- Press CTRL+M to open the Curves dialog box.
- Click the chevron to expand the Curve Display Options.
- Select the Pigment/Ink radio button.
- Click the Detailed Grid button, as shown in Dialog 2.
- Click the chevron to collapse the Curve Display Options.
- Click OK to save the settings.
Note: In older versions of Photoshop, you can accomplish these same changes by clicking on the gradient bar underneath the grid, and ALT-Clicking the grid.
You are now ready to follow along with Braintrove articles that make use of the Lab Color mode in Photoshop.
