IN THIS ARTICLE:
Something strange started happening with Outlook 2007. I would type in addresses of people I wanted to email, but when I sent the email I found that the recipients never got it. Sending again I found that they still didn’t get the email. Looking in my sent items I found that the wrong address was listed on the email. So I sent it to them one more time and then immediately checked my sent items, only to find that Outlook once again sent it to the wrong person—very strange!
The issue
Besides my regular Microsoft Exchange account, I use Outlook Connector to have Outlook manage my MSN and Hotmail accounts. I also run Norton Ghost 14. Recently, I needed to make a questionable change to my system, so I used Ghost to backup my system and then made the change. After concluding that the change was undesirable, I used Ghost to restore my system back to the previous state.
When the restore completed, everything seemed to work except that Outlook couldn't open the mailboxes and needed to regenerate them. After that, my Outlook Connector accounts started sending to unintended recipients—though not all the time, just for certain recipients. Also, if I clicked the TO button and selected the address directly from the Address Book for that account, instead of using the auto-resolved name, Outlook sent the email to the intended recipient. Deleting the auto-resolved names from the list and having Outlook regenerate them didn’t fix the issue.
The solution
It turns out that the Outlook nickname database got corrupted either during the system restore or during the regeneration of the mailboxes. This was easily resolved with a few simple steps, after which Outlook once again sent the emails to the intended recipients. Here’s what you need to do if this has happened to you.
Use the following steps to regenerate the Outlook nickname database in Windows Vista
- Exit Outlook to release the lock it has on the nickname files.
- Click the Start button or on your desktop.
- Press F3 to start a new search.
- Open the Advanced Search box.
- Select Computer in the Location drop-down list.
- Select the Include Non-Indexed, Hidden, and System Files check box.
- Type *.nk2 into the Name box, and then press Enter.
- Delete or rename the file(s).
- Launch Outlook.
Use the following steps to regenerate the Outlook nickname database in Windows XP
- Exit Outlook to release the lock it has on the nickname files.
- Launch Windows Explorer.
- Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu.
- On the View tab, select Show Hidden Files and Folders in the Advanced Settings area, and then click OK.
- Click Search, and then click All Files And Folders.
- Select My Computer in the Look In drop-down list.
- Type *.nk2 in the All Or Part Of The File Name box, and then press Enter.
- Delete or rename the file(s).
- Launch Outlook.
