This article has been tested to work with the following products and versions. No guarantee of compatibility, with or without modification, is offered for products or versions other than those listed.

The issue

After upgrading to Internet Explorer 8, I could no longer preview my InfoPath projects from within Visual Studio. I started getting the dreaded "InfoPath cannot open the selected form" error, as shown in Dialog 1. Clicking OK closed the preview window.
This very unhelpful dialog box appears for a variety of unknown reasons, some of which can be identified by publishing the form template to a local folder and then opening the published form to see a more detailed error message—often useful in debugging the actual issue. At other times when I get this dialog I am able to open the published form just fine, which has been a great blessing.
But since upgrading to Internet Explorer 8, opening the published form left me with several interesting messages described in detail below.

Various failures

The first message I got, Dialog 2 below, was titled, "Failed connection to data source" and read:
One or more data sources that are required to open this form are not available. They may be temporarily offline or your computer might not be connected to the network.

To try to connect to data sources click "Try to Connect". To use previously stored data, click "Work Offline".
The details of the message read:
The query cannot be run for the following DataObject: MyDataConnection
InfoPath cannot run the specified query.
    Access is denied.
Clicking Try To Connect, a second message was presented, Dialog 3 blow, which read:
InfoPath contacted a data source but failed to receive data. The form will load without the requested data.
The details of the message read the same as for Dialog 2 except that the details repeated for each data connection set to automatically retrieve data when the form is opened.
Finally, clicking OK, a third message was presented, Dialog 4 below, which read:
InfoPath cannot create a new, blank form.
InfoPath cannot open the form. To fix this problem, contact your system administrator.
